Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Professional Medical Ultrasonics, with locations in Beckley and Summersville, has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the only facility in West Virginia to achieve this distinction.
By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, and quality control procedures. PMU has earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary breast imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The breast imaging services at PMU are fully accredited in digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Professional Medical Ultrasonics offers an alternative to traditional in-hospital open surgical breast biopsy. The Mammotome Breast Biopsy system is a technologically advanced device which provides women with a new minimally invasive procedure to detect early breast cancer. Unlike traditional open surgical biopsy wich requires a large skin incision and core biopsy which requires multiple insertions of the device, the Mammotome requires only a single insertion. The procedure requires only a local anesthetic and can be performed on an out-patient basis, sometimes under ultrasound guidance only.
PMU is the only facility in this area which is accredited by the ACR for this procedure.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in non-pregnant women of any age is a common problem. Diagnosis in the early stages is very important and visualization of the entire uterine cavity is more accurate than blind sampling by D&C or endometrial biopsy. Hysterosonography is a safe, simple procedure performed in the office using transvaginal sonography and saline infusion into the endometrial cavity to delineate the entire cavity, usually allowing a quick definitive diagnosis, and thus preventing biopies and even more invasive procedures in many women.
Professional Medical Ultrasonics recommends prior pelvic ultrasound to rule out other causes of AUB and to determine if hysterosonography would be beneficial to the patient.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the united States. Early detection of vascular disease can prevent stroke, loss of limb, or even death. Our screening program includes Carotid Ultrasound, to look for fatty plaque in the carotid arteries; Ankle/Brachial Index to assess risk of vascular disease in the legs; Abdominal Aorta to screen for aneurysm; and Bone Density Exam to screen for osteoporosis.
Patients may come at their convenience, obtain results in 1-2 days instead of 2-3 weeks, and have the report sent to their local physician.
State of the Art Lunar Prodigy DEXA Bone Density Study
Approximately 50% of women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis and are at risk of an osteoporosis related fracture. A woman's risk
of hip fracture alone is equal to the combined risk of developing breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer - and up to 20% of victims
who suffer hip fractures die within one year of the fracture. Bone density testing provides an accurate picture of the risk of future
Bone mass cannot be accurately deduced from related clinical information such as inherited and lifestyle risk factors or spinal x-rays.
Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) can accurately measure bone density. Testing is safe, fast, non-invasive and painless.
Spine or hip measurements take approximately 2-5 minutes each and we will send a patient report promptly.
